Getting Legal Advice
Immigration Advice
The Shaheed Udham Singh Welfare Centre has been serving the community for over 46 years. We first opened our doors in 1978 with our own unique brand of warmth and care (apnapan -sense of belonging). Most of our clients are either unable to read or write English or who need a helping hand in navigating often complex and daunting paperwork. Our advisors are fluent in Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu.
We offer advice, information and guidance services that provide vital support to some of the most vulnerable members of the community. Our support helps members of the community navigate complex systems and secure financial and welfare assistance to meet their needs.
Support, Well-being and other work
Yaadein (Memories) Community Café for Asian Elders
The Yaadein community café has been is running successfully since March 2024. The café is a popular and much-loved safe space for Asian elders. Regular sessions include games, activities, debates, discussion, quizzes, talks, exercise, movement, workshops and health and well-being. The atmosphere is great with a lot of sharing of dukh Sukh (sorrow and joy) and support for each other.
Welfare Benefits
Our welfare advisors provide high quality services to clients who are often unaware of their entitlement to support, find the paperwork daunting or cannot read or write English. We aim to help individuals maximise income through a review of benefits, council tax, utility bills and other available resources.
We advise that you make an appointment to save time and avoid making numerous trips. Please check thoroughly against what service you require and ensure you have all the documents required before attending your appointment.

Women at the centre is a film club that meets every last Friday of the month 11-1pm.
MX60 and the 1964: Making History project
Throughout 2024, we worked with local young people to examine the significance of Malcolm X’s visit to Smethwick in February 1965. Through a series of arts-based workshops led by art researcher Jagdish Patel and historian Savita Vjie, participants explored the historical, cultural, and political context of the visit. The workshops culminated in a public exhibition hosted at the Centre. Alongside this programme, we collaborated with a range of organisations, campaigns, and community members to assess the continuing legacy and contemporary relevance of Malcolm X’s time in Smethwick.
